Sturdy, food grade, crack resistant, UV protected Polypropylene box is made in South East Queensland, by a 100% family owned Australian business and is 100% Australian Made. Just the carry case – not the entire kit – let’s be upfront and honest about this.

Our pump is a FloJet pump which is a pump brand owned by  Xylem Inc. Xylem is a large American water technology company. Their FloJet Pump is manufactured in China. 

Our Thirsty Nomad purifier contains technologies from Japan, Scotland, the USA, and Taiwan. The Thirsty Nomad “5 in 1” is made in Taiwan. We are working towards Australian Made.

Our delivery hoses are all Made in Australia and are food grade and drinking water quality.

Our suction hose is Made in Italy.

THE CREEK DRAW KIT IS RUN FROM THE BATTERY NOT FROM DIRECT POWER – let’s explain further.
Our Creek Draw Kit is run off the battery power. No need to run it with a plugged in power source, we have designed the Creek Draw Kit as a complete portable, powered unit that can be taken down to the creek’s edge and turned on – without the need to run long power cords or plug directly into power. The battery runs the Creek Draw Kit.
 
WHY 5 METRES OF SUCTION HOSE YOU ASK!!

We have designed the suction hose with the right distance for the pumps capacity. Pumps are better at pushing and pumps have a limit when it comes to ‘sucking’. 5 metres is the ideal suction distance that our 12V pump can do. This also has alot to do with the weight of the water and the diametre of the suction hose. It’s all about Fluid Dynamics!

LET’S TALK ABOUT FLOW RATE

The Creek Draw Kit has been specifically designed to be used within a certain window of parametres. We recommend that for optimal performance, using the supplied 5 metres of suction hose. The river/creek should be relatively clear and free flowing.  The lift (or gradiant) should not be no more than 1.8metres and the delivery distance should not exceed 30 metres. Under the above mentioned parameters you should get a water flow rate of 4 litres per minute.

NOW, LET’S TALK ABOUT “LIFT” 

Further to the information above, the pump also has a maximum “lift” capacity. The pump in our Creek Draw Kit is a 11 litre/minute, 12 Volt, FloJet Marine Grade Pump. It has a maximum “lift” of 1.6 metres so it is best to find a creek bank that is no more than 1.6 metres “lift” (gradiant) in height.

BUT I WANT TO LIFT “HIGHER” THAN 1.8 METRES?

Well, the answer to this is “yes, you can” but your delivery flow rate will decrease. Our Creek Draw Kit is designed to provide you with a flow rate of 4 litres per minute at the parameters we provide which is: 5 metre suction distance and a 30 metre delivery distance and a 1.6 metre lift. If the lift is greater than 1.6 metres your delivery flow rate will decrease.

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE LITHIUM ION BATTERY 

It’s a 12 Volt lithium ion battery (LiFePO 4 battery) that can be charged with either a 12 V charger or a 240 V charger – you will receive both the 12 V and the 240 V Chargers, as standard, in your creek draw kit order.  Please note,  the 12 Volt charger will only charge the battery to 80% charge.  The 240 Volt charger will charge the battery to 100%. There are many advantages in using a LiFePO4 battery including safety. Battery has a life of between 800 and 1000 charging cycles.

 LET’S TALK ABOUT THE PUMP

The pump is a 12 Volt, 11 litre per minute FloJet marine grade pump. Why did we chose this pump? Because it’s reliable, robust and durable. It is sturdy and it has the superior performance to “suck” water from 5 metres away and the superior performance to “deliver” water up to a 30 metre distance. And, we found that the FloJet has a very reliable reputation in the industry for many years.

LET’S TALK ABOUT SALT WATER

NO NO NO NO, the Thirsty Nomad Creek Draw Kit is NOT suitable to treat salt water. Nor is it suitable to treat highly saline Great Artesian Bore Water. Groundwater quality of the GAB varies but generally has salinity of 500 to 1500 ppm. The Thirsty Nomad cannot remove salts that occur in waters with a ppm range greater than 500 ppm. The salts will calcify and clog our purifier. We recomend to all our customers to fill up their tanks with our Bore Water and Sediment Tank Fill Pre- Filter when using Bore Water.

LET’S TALK ABOUT WATER QUALITY, SEDIMENT AND SILT

Please, do not use the creek draw kit in water that has discolouration or suspended silt, sediment and/or fines. You must always draw water from a clear, fresh flowing stream. The water must be as clean and as clear as it possibly can be.

LET’S TALK ABOUT CHARGING THE BATTERY

It’s good to think of it as 1:1. We’ll explain what we mean by 1:1 ratio. If you run the pump for 20 minutes, it will take approximately 20 minutes to re-charge the power you have used. Additionally, always fully charge the battery before use. While the creek draw kit will still work…if you don’t charge the battery before you, you lessen the life of the battery. It’s just good practice and we want you to get the most life out of your creek draw kit.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO FULLY CHARGE THE 12 Volt Battery 

It will take approximately 20 minutes to fully re-charge the 12 Volt battery.

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PUMP SUCTION (SUCK) AND PUMP DELIVERY (PUSH)

Pumps are inherently better at “pushing” water rather than “sucking” water this is also the reason why we provide you with a 5 metre suction hose. 

WHERE SHOULD I DRAW WATER FROM?

You must only draw water from a clear, freshwater river or creek that has no discolouration and it not heavily brown with silt and/or sediment. The water must be clear, free-flowing freshwater – OTHERWISE YOU RISK DAMAGING THE PUMP WITH SILT AND SEDIMENTATION. Do not draw from stagnant puddles. Do not draw from rivers or creeks close to towns or cities as you don’t neccessarily know where the town or city sewage outfall is located along the river or creek. Do not draw from a river or creek that shows signs of algal blooms. Do not draw from a river or creek that is salty or close to the coast as you cannot always know where the tide line is and where the salt water meets the fresh water. Try to avoid heavily silted rivers or creeks – the silt will VERY quickly clog your sediment filters and will damage the pump rendering it completely inoperable.  Try to avoid drawing from rivers and creeks after heavy rainfall events when surface runoff is high.

LET’S TALK ABOUT “DELIVERY” HOSE VS “SUCTION” HOSE

Not all hoses are created equal! It comes back to that science of fluid dynamics! A “delivery” hose has very different design characteristics to a “suction” hose. A suction hose has to be coiled so water is sucked in a circular motion which increases velocity and assists with the ‘sucking’. 

A delivery hose should be food grade, UV resistant, steel braied and ridgid to allow a consistent flow rate. 

You should not use lay flat hose as a delivery hose. Lay flat hose will disrupt flow by “flattening” out. The reason they “flatten” out is because they need alot of water pressure to maintain a consitent flow. These are designed for use with mains pressure.

The Thirsty Nomad Creek Draw Kit is certified to AS/NZS 61000.6.3 (EMC). This is for Electro Magnetic Compatibility – to make sure it doesn’t cause interference – especially with our Emergency Services and Telecommunications providors and our fellow campers electrical appliances.

The Thirsty Nomad Creek Draw Kits power supply is certified to AS/NZS 61558.2.16. This is the mandatory Australian Safety Certification for the 240 Volt power supply.
